Top tips for event networking as a human resources or employment relations student

Updated: Oct 5, 2018

There are so many resources on networking out there, but here is one that's been specially created by HR & ER students, for HR & ER students. See our 2 top tips below!

1. Hit up all the events

STEM student career evening? Go!

Migrant career fair? Get your feet moving!

AUT HERC event? We will see you there!

All of these events will have HR & ER professionals attending to represent their companies. As an HR/ ER student you have the benefit of being able build your network across any industries you like!

2. Do your research on the company and their HR/ER team

Find out which companies are going to be at the events you're attending and look up their HR/ER teams on LinkedIn. You may just meet one of these people there, and it helps to know a little about them!

In your LinkedIn search, include the company name along with terms like HR, human resources, employment relations, people & capability, people & performance, learning & development, etc. Make sure that you look at the summary and interests on the LinkedIn profiles that you find, to see whether you have shared values or interests that might help you to connect.

Checking out the "about us", "our people", and "careers" sections on a company's website is also a great way to find out about the HR/ ER team. See what you can find out about the way they work and whether it lines up with you:

Are they informal or corporate?

Do their values match up with yours?

Do they have any people-specific goals?

Are they tech and social media savvy?

What kind of events and support do they give their people?

So there you have it; go to any events that you fancy, and find out who's going to be there that you might connect well with!

You may have got to this point and be wondering, why not 3 top tips? Or 10? Well, we couldn't think of any more. So, if you have any further tips that you would generously like to share with our community, please leave a comment below.
